Honouring the Seasons with Ohagi (おはぎ) This evening in the U.K. is the autumn equinox. Just like the equinox balances day and night, ohagi balances flavors and textures: • Sticky and soft • Earthy and sweet • Nutty coatings or smooth anko The act of making and sharing ohagi during Shūbun no Hi also creates balance, between generations, between past and present, and between body and spirit. To celebrate this year I made some Ohagi coated in sweet kabocha pumpkin with a walnut paste filling. Along with more of the traditional varieties.
